Scorecard data for  State and Local Tax Burdens

State Sales Tax Per Capita, 2004

Sales taxes per capita is a comparative measure of taxes paid to both state and local governments in a state by individuals and businesses.

Pennsylvania levies a relatively high tax rate (6%). However, since a smaller number of items are subjected to the tax, Pennsylvania's burden is low. For example, food, clothing, prescriptions, and many services are not taxed in Pennsylvania.
